Practice Matters is a research-focused consultancy offering integrated architectural, interior, product, and furniture design services. We specialise in material and adaptive reuse, defit/refit, and design for disassembly and deconstruction. Bringing circular design and ecological principles to our process, we work with private, institutional and community-based partners and clients to create climate positive and socially-sustainable built environments and designed objects.

Our studio is contextually embedded in the bustling heart of Naarm/Melbourne and the remote wilds of Lutruwita/Tasmania. Each one of our projects employs context-rich knowledges, local materials and suppliers. We offer full design and architectural services as well as design research and circular design consulting services.

Charlotte is a registered architect who has spent the last decade developing her materials-based practice through making, testing, and direct engagement with craft. Her work explores the overlaps and tensions between the discipline of architecture and a broader design practice, focusing on the responsibilities of designers as we move towards building beyond extraction.

Mark is a product, furniture, and interior designer who specialises in design-for-disassembly and design-for-deconstruction. Mark has a PhD in Architecture and Design and alongside his practice, has developed and delivered university programs in architecture, product and furniture design at the University of Western Australia and University of Tasmania.

Practice Matters emerged from Charlotte and Mark’s experience as co-leads of the Industrial Design Research Lab (IDRL) which was founded at the University of Western Australia in 2018.
